“And Adam knew Eve his wife: who conceived and brought forth Cain, saying: I have gotten a man through God.” (Genesis 4:1)

Literal Sense:  Eve came from Adam and the physical love between the two produced Cain.

Allegorical Sense: As Eve came from the side of Adam and the love between the two produced Cain, so the Son is eternally begotten of the Father and from the love of the Father and the Son eternally proceeds the Holy Spirit.

Moral Sense: As Eve came from Adam and their love produced Cain, so it is that the Church is born of God and the love between God and the Church produces a virtuous life.

Anagogical Sense: As Eve came from the side of Adam and the love between the two produced Cain so it is that the Church was born out of the side of Christ (John 19:34) and the love between the two is an eternal bond.
